FBI Issues Warning About Escalating Microsoft Scam

The FBI is warning about a scam that tricks people using Microsoft email, chat, or file-sharing services into giving away account access or personal information. If someone gets into your account, they may read your messages, steal files, or use your name to trick others.

Who Is at Risk

Anyone who uses Microsoft email, video calls, work or school chat, or stores files online and gets unexpected messages asking them to sign in, approve something, or open a link.

What to Watch For

Be careful with surprise messages about missed files, urgent sign-ins, security warnings, payment problems, or requests to “verify” your account, especially if they pressure you to act fast.

What to Do

Do not click links in unexpected messages, go directly to your Microsoft account by typing the official website yourself, and turn on extra login protection if it is not already enabled.
